# Google Ads Manufacturing Market Study: Methodology

This note explains how the six-market benchmark was collected, screened, summarized, and what the estimates can tell you.

## Collection settings

- Collection date: 6 October 2026 (UTC).
- Geography: United States.

## Sample and screening

The study covers CNC and precision machining, metal and sheet-metal fabrication, plastic injection molding, electronics manufacturing and PCB assembly, industrial automation integrators, and contract manufacturing as a cross-market reference. Each group contains 25 accepted terms; the full sample has 150 terms across 126 variant families.

Each market began with eight seed terms and considered up to 17 additional Google Ads suggestions in the returned relevance order. The sample was not padded to reach the cap. Job and training searches, informational queries, resource and media searches, equipment purchases, software and downloads, and consumer or hobbyist terms were excluded.

Accepted terms include explicit provider or service searches such as “company,” “supplier,” “manufacturer,” “shop,” “fabricator,” “integrator,” “quote,” “RFQ,” and “near me.” The primary sample also retains head, category, and capability terms such as “machining,” “fabrication,” “molding,” “assembly,” “custom,” “contract,” “OEM,” “solutions,” and “programming” when the market context supports supplier intent. The sensitivity views show how the comparison changes when those broader terms are removed.

The suggestions endpoint does not identify which seed produced each suggestion, so the study does not assign a suggestion to a single seed when that information is unavailable. Suggestions returned for more than one market were flagged and excluded from the primary sample until they could be assigned responsibly.

## Grouping close variants

The term-level file retains all accepted rows. For market summaries, a conservative family key removes trailing commercial boilerplate such as “services,” “company,” “supplier,” and “manufacturer,” while keeping meaningful modifiers such as “custom,” “contract,” “precision,” and “OEM.” Each family contributes one representative term, prioritizing a seed and then search volume. Close variants are not added together as separate searches. The family key is a reporting aid; it does not claim that Google always groups the terms in the same way.

## Comparison views

The primary view uses one seed-priority representative per family. The sensitivity file compares it with a view that excludes literal “near me” terms, a view that selects the highest-volume accepted term per family, and a combination of those two choices.

A separate explicit-provider view removes 50 accepted head and category terms that lack a strict provider or service modifier, then selects new representatives. It contains 100 terms across 87 families and retains “near me” terms. The nonlocal explicit-provider view also removes “near me” terms; it contains 72 terms across 59 families. Results with fewer than 15 representative families are directional. Choosing the highest-volume term instead of the seed-priority term changes 4% to 17% of representatives, depending on the market.

## Interpretation limits

- These are Google Ads search estimates for a screened sample, not observed campaign performance, CTR, conversion rate, cost per lead, CPA, ROAS, or a forecast of obtainable demand.
- `actual_data=False` means the returned search-volume data is not labeled as actual data. Top-of-page bid ranges are indicative estimates, not guaranteed CPCs or budgets.
- The competition index describes competition for paid placement, not SEO difficulty.
- Google can report combined volume for close variants. Family medians are not additive market sizes, and missing or zero volume remains in the data. Sparse samples make summaries directional rather than stable.
- The contract-manufacturing group overlaps the process-specific markets and serves only as a cross-market reference.
- Eight groups of families share identical 12-month profiles. That is a data-quality signal; it does not prove Google grouped the terms or that their search intent is equivalent.
- English was requested. DataForSEO's documentation notes that language may be deprecated or returned as null, so the requested setting and returned values should be read accordingly.
